Round Table Make First Donation After Fireworks Success

Picture
Billericay Round Table have made their first donation of £300 to Greig City Academy following the success of the recent fireworks event where £45,000 was raised for charity

Greig City Academy is an 11-19 inner city state school based in Haringey, North London and is the only London comprehensive school with its own fleet of self renovated boats on which students start taking on the challenge of sailing for the first time.

Teacher, Mr Jon Holt who heads up the sailing project at the school told Round Table at a recent meeting “We purchase boats requiring a little love and attention and renovate them in school.  This has the benefit of making the whole scheme affordable and providing the opportunity for our students to learn valuable craft and maintenance skills.”

He went on to add “This donation from Round Table will enable us to start to train the next set of students willing to give sailing a go.”
Round Table Chairman Dan Jackson said “To donate money that helps these kids get out onto the water and experience something completely different to the inner city is amazing.”
He added “These young lads came along and made a serious presentation to us about their sailing adventures leading up to the Fastnet race in August. So it’s not only the sailing, it’s the renovation of the boats and the presentation skills they are learning.”

Why?

Ask 10 members of Round Table why they joined and you will get 10 different answers. It is initially the social side, getting out of the house to do something different once a fortnight.

Then the real attraction of Round Table goes beyond this, because once you are involved, there is a mixture of respect, banter and belonging which does not exist elsewhere.
